What is a strange course! The inter-relations of arts? What a subject!
First -- about the scope of the class. And the aim.

Second, formal principles. Structure, Texture, Composition laws.

Applications -- Films, Stage, Plays and so on.

The Message: how it is relevant to us.

If I am to teach this course again, I will changes a few things. The 2001 didn't have enough focus on the basics, which should be seen as the fundamentals for everything for other theatre and film classes.

Chekhov's one-acts are updated -- The Bear, The Proposal (1st act -- Oh, Love!), Wedding, Tobacco (Act II -- Ah, Marriage!), but I'm still working on the "funeral" (Last Day of Anton Chekhov). mini-chekhov

Intro

* Use http://vtheatre.net to link to Virtual Theatre pages!
thGlobe died at the end of the Summer of 2001 and many of my "Theatre with Anatoly" pages got lost, including the 200X pages. This is the bad news. The good news -- I'm teaching this class now and will make better pages!

Many moons ago this class was nothing but "Introduction to Theatre" -- later it became The Core Aesthetics course, required for ALL students. At first it was taught by three instructors (Music, Art and Theatre) for big classes, but the departments went their own ways and now this course is in the hands of each individual instructor. That's how the film element was introduced, I did it.

I thought that starting with the movies it will be easier for the non-art majors to enter the world of Arts.

Plays: Hamlet, Mikado, The Life of Three, Dangerous Liaisons (maybe "3 Sisters")

Films: Hamlet, Amadeus, Dangerous Liasons (Glenn Close, John Malkovich, Michelle Pfeiffer), Chaplin ("my favorites" -- students' selection).

Use VIDEO and/or DVD htmlgear listings for recommended titles.

Summary

Drama, Art, Music Through Film (plus the Art History as the way to today).

In BOOKS directory see the pointerts for each class. Also, use the syllabus in CLASSES directory!
