Teaching Theatre

Web Aim: independent learning, self taught, self-learning, alternative (keywords). Educate yourself! You are your teacher! Read!
I have a page on teaching film and this page is about teaching theatre.

For other instructors and administrators.

I teach Acting, Directing and Theory.

I direct and this is teaching too (Shows).

I teach full-time since 1986, but my Virginia years (Hollins College) are before the Web Era and not online.

Russian-American Theatre Project (1992-1994) was also about teaching with the idea of mixing American students with Russian professional actors in productions.

How do I teach Theatre?

As you can see, I use Internet/Web, requiring all my students to know computers. Outside of the rehearsal time most of the exchanges are done on several Forums I have.

The class pages are hyperlinked, but recently I organized them into webTextbooks for cyber students of theatre. Of course, they are based on the actual courses I taught and my methods.

From Anatoly XXI
...

I teach. I teach since I came to USA in 1980, although it wasn't in my mind when I defected. I like to teach. I like college theatre environment. After over two decades of working in academia conditions, I know why I do like it.

Freedom.

Freedom from commercial requirements (for years I direct only the great plays). In my classes I deal only with the masterpieces -- and the subjects I love. The books on theatre I read, I would be reading even without teaching theatre.

I like students. They are young. Very young. This is how I know the country and the future of the culture. Consider it learning, consider it a research!

Sometimes I miss working with professional actors, but, I guess, not so much. If I would be missing it really bad, I could find the time to do it.

If not for my academia schedule, I won't be able to do so much web-work, which is also directly related to my "employment" -- teaching. I still wonder how did it happened that the new medium (web and internet) come about, while I was teaching! Oh, yes, you can find the moments, when I complain about me-webmaster, who takes too much time away from me-writer, but it's my preferences -- I developing the "working space" (web) for my interests and thoughts.

In short, I feel that I am teaching myself every day, day after day, year after year! I learn -- what could be better than that?

As you can guess, I advocate your own personal life-long learning process. Without you at the start and the end of the studying, everything is useless. You must learn how to teach yourself. And this is why my pages are public and still are free.

And yes, I would like to help the homeschooling folks. The twelve years of the public education in America is a disaster! Sooner or later this system will take country down... Web and Internet -- this is my last hope.

I do not have "teaching" directory, because most of my instructional pages are for classes I teach. In my courses directories I have "students" and "instructors" -- close to "guides," "help" and "faq" (service) pages. This is the most recent addition to my webpages, since I am no longer the only one, who is using them.

Do not expect any well organized "how-to" guidelines (I wish).

[ from service page ] "The University of Phoenix has become successful, in part, by having content experts develop online courses, and then training other adjunct professors to teach them." (chronical.com)

[ The Arizona college is paying $1,000 for two-credit courses and $1,500 for three-credit courses per semester. That is compared to the $10,000 that the Community College of Denver spent to develop each course. ]

"It cuts to the heart of what a faculty member is," Mr. Wagner says. "When an institution of higher education hires a faculty member, the faculty member is supposed to teach, participate in university affairs in some way as a form of service, and participate in scholarship." http://chronicle.com/free/v51/i08/08a02801.htm

* Last month, the Monterey Institute for Technology and Education received a $1.5-million grant to create its online repository to help colleges looking for ready-to-deliver online course content find institutions willing to provide it.

* textbooks, as currently produced, have already undergone a process of quality control. But what happens in the case of "outsourced" materials that are not created by recognized faculty, reviewed by outside bodies such as publishers or peer review bodies, affiliated with established institutions, or otherwise subject to some means of external evaluation that involves real standards and controls?
